Highest level of power appropriate for a street driven car

This has been going on for a long time. Monster machines with ever more power, but they really do get kinda ridiculous for street driving after a while. I figure a stout RWD platform putting down into the low 500s is really about the peak. Of course "how" it makes and puts down that power is important. A ZR1 or exotics can be fairly docile when driving calmly, but most home spun high power cars are, uh, a bit less refined. Whattaya think.

94cobra69ss396 05-12-2010 02:40 PM

This all depends on how much driving you are talking about as well as what type of driving and how you are making the power. If you are talking about a car that you can take out on the weekends to enjoy I think you can go over 600rwhp. But if you're talking about a daily driver I think 500 - 600 is max that you would want with something like my Cobra with a small block and a SC. If you had something larger like Carlos's 408 but had a SC with it I think you could get away with 700+ and it would still drive nice day even in traffic.

Vettezuki 05-12-2010 03:26 PM

I wonder for a couple reasons. One is that at some point up there street cars with ultra race car power become squirly as all hell and bad things happen. The other is that, at least here in the OC, I RARELY get anywhere near the mere 390WHP I have and honestly it's big plenty having lots of fun. I'm sure'd be different if you lived out in an area with nice roads and less traffic in a car that was fully properly setup. Probably the reality is that for most people that have cars with this much power, they're really getting anywhere near it either, just a stab for a second or two here and there in which case maybe it's way more about the swagger than anything.

94cobra69ss396 05-12-2010 03:49 PM

Out here it's a lot better. Most of my drives require me to get on the freeway so I get to enjoy my 436rwhp quite a lot. The Cobra puts it down well too. Now the Chevelle is a different story. Even with only 461rwhp you can't jump on it in first or second gear on the street tires. That's because it makes peak torque below the 3600 rpms stall speed of the converter so it will just blaze the tires. Even if you are doing 65 and drop it in second gear it'll smoke them.

big_G 05-12-2010 07:50 PM

I'm a little biased...but for sure, you don't NEED 625 rwhp....but do you WANT it?...yup. Just for those special occasions.:D BTW, my ride idles at 750 rpm and under about 3K you have no idea what is under the hood.

That's kind of what I'm talking about. Your car would be no problem driving in traffic every day. But imagine a N/A combo that made the same amount of power at the wheels as your Vette. You wouldn't want to drive it in day to day traffic.

Leedom 05-12-2010 09:44 PM

I have to agree with Ben on this. I think that 400 to 500 is a good number. Day in and day out driving will not get you much enjoyment. Of course if we are looking at it Ron's way and it is a weekend driver then I think 500 to 600 is not a problem. I think FI cars have a much easier time as well in that just cruising around in traffic they are pretty mildly mannered but stomp on it and it can kick you in the teeth.

Vettezuki 05-12-2010 11:01 PM

I've thought about this a bit more. Once entering the 400 - 600 WHP range which we seem to generally agree is big plenty for a street car, there's kind of three basic ways to get there.

- Big boost low displacement. The problem is these won't be super friendly street drivers, they may lag then hit with a wave of boost.

- Bigger cube high comp motors. Great, but there on all.the.time. and swill the gas.

- Moderate displacement and boost, say 302 - 383, with around 8 - 12 psi. You can easily get into these power ranges on pump gas, and with plenty of torque from the displacement you can drive around in something like a regular car.

What's wrong with 13lbs?!

...I want 20lbs of boost :(

Then again, that would probably make my car slower with only 275s. Haha.

enkeivette 05-15-2010 01:08 AM

I'm at the point where anything less than 400hp just feels slow to me. I remember in HS when Sean's 320hp Camaro felt like it 'held me back in the seat.' Ha.

For me it's more a matter of traction. I think an SRT4 has too much power for the traction it has, it's sort of annoying and I wouldn't want it as a DD. But then Sean's Cobra has more than twice that much hp and it isn't too much for the street at all.

Cambria makes too much for the tires, but with some Viper sized tires on there it might be livable, who knows.

If it has AC and a radio and isn't as loud as my Vette, I'll take 1,000hp with big enough tires, who cares?

Well, to be fair....The 20lbs. was for the dyno pulls. I will put the 15 lbs. pulley back on for street driving, in an effort to keep the heads on the block...:smack:

550RWHP + 26 miles per gallon + Smooth ride =

Plus the fact that it pulls like a mother ^%$er with only 9psi!

Ford GTO? I think he's talking about his TT GTO FS.

We were. His GTO makes the Cobra feel really slow.

BlacknBoostn 05-17-2010 10:20 AM

FWD here and probably not much more than 450 for DD. Streetable at more than that yes. difficult? yes.

RWD probably closer to 500-600 DD... weekender = 700-800

AWD... buahahaha. I think I'd be happy with a solid 600 whp awd platform.

enkeivette 05-17-2010 12:31 PM

Thougt Ron was talking about the Cobra.

What I said about the SRT4, I am used to my Mom's open diff. So an 04+ would prob feel good for quite a bit more power.

BADDASSC6 05-17-2010 01:15 PM

This is all about the money. My old Monte carlo and Mustang both felt like they had more than what was streetable with 350-430 rwhp. Both cars sucked. The vette is in the mid fives and very streetable. I can drive off in second or third off idle with no throttle.

Stay in school!

SeanPlunk 05-18-2010 09:18 AM

Watching you guys argue is comedy.

-Carlos, your new engine is a beast and I think you'll have a very successful season
-Ron, I have complete confidence in your engine building skills and I believe 100% you could build a 1000hp engine if you wanted to and had enough money.
-Adam, you're still the McGyver of cars and your engine is also a beast.

Back to the original argument - I think anything over 360rwhp is realistically plenty for a street car. Having said that, with forced induction it's easy to get 600+ and still be very streetable. I'm shooting for 550+ wheel with the Cobra :)

BlacknBoostn 05-18-2010 12:23 PM

^^ 550 wheel on your cobra will be nice :) I'm still planning someday to have 400-450 on this car. many things will happen before that though.

enkeivette 05-18-2010 12:26 PM

For a DD with the most power I'd have to give the trophee to Sean. Your Cobra makes really big power but sitting on the freeway it was quiet, idled smooth, AC, comfy seats... I'd rather drive it to SF than my Neon.

The Cobras are definitely excellent all arounders, including trunk and back seats, etc. I think I might get a turbo porsche some day. I've always liked them and the make great super great all weather all arounders and can make some pretty serious streetable power.

jedhead 05-19-2010 11:12 PM

I like my DD. 387whp is enough for me for now. I like all luxury with the power.

I like all the luxury I have with the Cobra too (AC, DVD, CC, etc.) but 436rwhp feels slow. I'm ready for mid 500's.

heypal 05-21-2010 08:32 PM

It's all about 550-600whp to the front wheels while having a great riding car that looks good with 3 tvs navi ice cold ac and a banging system. All with a car you can carry on a conversation in because it sounds almost stock.(till a cut out is open) then it sounds like a tractor. Oh and being horrible unreliable and getting 28mpg+ on the hwy. :)
