%&#*@!!!!! Arrrgh

Dodge has constructed my car in such a way to make it hell to live in california.

With the STOCK exhaust from the turbo to tips I did not pass the sound test. 114 decibels out of one pipe and 118 decibels out of the other.
Just gonna have to fight it in court.

Maybe I should get a 'Stang.

They probably didnt do the test properly then. Dont you have to be like 10 feet back and 5 feet to the side or something along those lines? There also cant be anything around that reflects sound, you have to be on a hard flat surface.

That sounds like a bad test. 118db is goddamned loud.

Who tested it? Did they follow the EXACT testing procedure specified by the state? If the measuring device was was too close it would give you this high reading. Imagine someone talking at normal volume directly into your ear, that would be way loud. Distance matters A LOT.

PS CA sucks in many ways.

It was the california state ref that tested the car so I assume it was done right...

Ben, u know where I can locate what the EXACT procedures for that??? The meter was about 1 foot from the tips. Measured consistently both times.

It was basically the volume of the borla + stock downpipe lol

The procedure is SAE J1169. Unfortunately I couldn't find a copy of the procedure. You can get one from SAE for like $50, but you could probably find somebody that has it if you look around.

It seems the test specifies 95db at 20 inches, static load. That's pretty loud, but not super loud. I don't remember your SRT4 being that loud. 118db is loud!

Here's a guide for relative noise levels. (Pay attention to the distances!)

A power lawn mower is about 95db. So that's what the allowable loudness at 20 inches from the pipe would be (as I understand from skimming on the spec). 118 db is like a jet taking off at full power just a couple hundred feet away. So I'm skeptical your car is that loud.

Ugh haha this is complicated. I'm skeptical of that myself... At least with the stock exhaust. The prior exhaust setup would definitely have been too loud but we're not talking about that one...

Any idea what rpms they should be testing at?? They tested me at 4050 rpms

I thought I read the specification is like 50% of peak HP. Which I'm guessing for you is something like 2,500rpm. Don't know how they handle that.

I know what you are saying about CA. Have you got hit for no front license plate? My buddy had to drive around for a month looking for a cop that understood that Dodge did not put any place for a front license plate on that car. He ended up just zip tying it to the front, getting the ticket signed off, then cut the damn thing off again.

There's no way that a SRT-4 with a stock exhaust could be even half as loud or obnoxious as a Honda with a fart can. They should redesign the test to be based on a logarithmic scale of how pissed off a random selection of people get when they hear your car pass. LOL

Haven't yet but when I do I know someone to sign it off. Unfortunately this particular one required a ref.

And I effing agree on the later statement hahahahahahahaha I think they should put mufflers on the harleys before the ticket me again lol.
