All though you do you have a constitutional right to protection from illegal search and seizure. I believe this instance falls into a gray area. The police weren't searching your premises for any thing pertaining to you. They were however looking for a person. If that person had, for instance, just committed a violent crime, they have the right to follow him wherever he may go. You could of had a bong on your coffee table and they would have walked right by it. Where they went wrong was not telling you why they were searching your apt. It does however suck and I'm sure didn't help your studying.
