I'd just fix what ever is wrong with the original axle. You know what's wrong with the replacement so you know it needs a new carrier, ring and pinion and rebuild kit. So pull the original apart and see what's wrong with it and fix which ever is cheaper.

The original carrier exploded through the differential cover. Took it to Adams Steel and got like $25 for it.
